To get on the right bus, check three things: the line number, the travel direction and the vehicle’s terminus. Then compare this information with the stop pole and the bus display. Two nearby stops with the same name can serve opposite directions.

## identify your line and destination

Start from where you want to get off. On the line map, locate your departure and arrival stops. Verify that they are connected by the planned route at the time of travel.

The line number alone is not enough. A line can have branches, variants or services that end before the main terminus.

If you are new to the network, start by [reading its map](https://www.roote.ai/en/guides/how-to-read-a-bus-tram-or-metro-map/) to place the two stops.

## understand the direction shown by the terminus

The direction is often shown by a final destination, which may be far from where you want to get off. You do not need to go to the terminus: you are looking for a vehicle whose route passes your stop.

Teaching example: the fictional line 12 connects “Gare” to “Université” via “Mairie” then “Musée”. From Mairie, to reach Musée you take the Université direction. The Gare direction takes you the opposite way.

If your destination is on a branch, check the terminus displayed for that specific run. Two buses with the same number may not follow exactly the same route.

## distinguish stops with the same name

Look at the side of the street and the exact location of the stop point. a common name can group several platforms or poles.

In a bus station or a large interchange, look for the platform indicated for the line and direction. The central point on a map may represent the whole location; it does not necessarily identify your boarding point.

Our guide to [finding the nearest stop](https://www.roote.ai/en/guides/find-the-nearest-bus-or-tram-stop/) explains how to verify that location.

## compare the on-site indications

Check the line number, the direction and, when present, the list of next stops. Then look at the vehicle’s display before boarding. If in doubt, ask whether the bus serves your stop.

Temporary signage may indicate a moved stop or a diversion. Follow the network’s information for the relevant day rather than an old location saved in your favorites.

To check a service, select the stop and the line. Confirm the travel direction and the date of travel.

## identify partial termini

A vehicle can finish before your destination even if it belongs to the right line and direction. Check the displayed destination and the stops served.

In the evening or during works, also consult service information. If you need to change vehicles, plan the transfer point and the walking time.

You can explore the recorded stops on [ROOTE](https://roote.ai/), then confirm direction and services with the network when that information is not provided.
