Displayed times can change because an estimate is updated, new service information is received, or the app switches data source. An increasing countdown alone does not reveal the cause. First check the stop, direction and type of schedule shown.
Why waiting minutes sometimes increase
An estimate uses the situation known at the moment it was calculated. More recent information can push the expected passage later. The countdown can then go from three to five minutes without you changing your search.
If the app does not show the source or update time, avoid interpreting every change as an exact measurement of the vehicle. A time can also be calculated from a scheduled passage.
Our guide scheduled vs real-time times explains how to recognize these data.
Find transport stops nearby.
Explore stops listed around a city or your location. Check the details for transport modes and available information.
Why a departure disappears from the screen
A departure can disappear because it is considered passed, because a cancellation is announced, or because the information is no longer available. It may also no longer appear in a list limited to the next departures.
The GTFS-RT format in particular allows sending updates and trip cancellations. That describes possible information, not the certain cause of every change on your screen. GTFS Realtime — Trip Updates.
Check the network alerts and look for the next departure. The absence of a line in one app does not prove that the entire service is suspended.
Why two apps contradict each other
They may use different sources, refresh intervals or display rules. One may show an estimate, the other a scheduled departure. They may also show two nearby stops without clearly indicating that.
When real-time data is unavailable, the displayed time can be the theoretical timetable. Two tools can therefore present information of a different nature.
So comparing minutes alone is not enough. Also compare the exact stop, direction and service day.
Check the information step by step
- Confirm the stop name and its location.
- Check the line, direction and final stop of the departure.
- See whether the time is scheduled or updated.
- Check for any network disruptions.
- Refresh the search if the interface allows it.
Fictional example: one app shows two minutes, the other eight. The first refers to the stop across the street, in the opposite direction. The issue here is the selected location, even before any question of data freshness.
Our guide to finding the right stop and direction helps avoid this confusion.
What to do when a time seems uncertain
For an important connection, prepare an alternative and keep a buffer. On site, compare the stop signage with the official network information. A passage shown on a map should not lead you to ignore signs about a closure or temporary relocation.
ROOTE is meant to explore available information in covered areas. a stop page and a passage estimate answer two distinct questions: where the stop is and when the vehicle might pass.
Frequently asked questions
Does an increasing countdown mean the bus is stuck?
Not necessarily. Several causes can change the estimate; check the network information.
Does an official app guarantee every displayed time?
It is a useful source, but an estimate can still evolve.
Should I immediately change stops if a departure disappears?
First check the direction, alerts and the next departure before arranging a detour.
