A bike-share is rented for a trip and then returned according to the network rules: to a dock or to an authorized spot. For your first time, choose a service, check its pricing, prepare access and locate where you will return the bike.
Exact operation depends on the operator. Here are the steps to understand before you go.
Understanding the different services
Bikes can be clustered in docks or distributed individually across a service area. They can also be mechanical or electric-assist: this distinction is independent from the parking mode.
An electric bike is still a pedaled bike; the assistance helps your effort. On the map, look for vehicle type and battery when indicated. Do not assume all bikes in the same dock are identical.

Accessing the service
Check the official terms before going to the dock. Some services offer one-off access, others passes and subscriptions. A user account, when required, identifies you; it does not automatically mean you have subscribed.
Prepare the requested access method: app, card or terminal. Also check payment and any deposit required.

Unlocking and checking your bike
Identify the selected bike, then follow the service instructions. Unlocking may use a code, a card or an in-app scan. Wait for confirmation: selecting a bike on a screen does not prove it is released.
Before riding, check visible items: tires, saddle, handlebars and absence of obviously damaged parts. Adjust the saddle and familiarize yourself with the controls. If there is a problem, report it according to the operator’s procedure and choose another bike.
Properly ending the rental
In a docked network, return the bike to the designated spot and verify it is properly locked. For a dockless network, check the authorized zones and the end-of-ride instructions. A photo may be required by some services.
The rental ends when the service confirms it is closed. A bike placed or secured is not necessarily enough. If confirmation is missing, keep the vehicle identifier, the time and the elements requested by support.
Understanding the trip cost
Read together the unlocking fees, the included duration and the price beyond that. A subscription may grant access without making all uses free.
Fictional example: a plan includes thirty minutes per ride, then charges for additional minutes. A continuous outing of forty minutes exceeds that duration even if you are subscribed. Compare the actual duration of your trips to the pass conditions.
A pause can also keep the rental active. Do not confuse it with a return.
Preparing your first use
To start with confidence, choose a simple trip and a pre-identified return location. Avoid discovering the service just before a tight connection.

Can you keep the bike all day?
Rules and cost depend on the plan. Bike-share can become expensive for a prolonged continuous rental.
How do I know the return succeeded?
Follow the network procedure and verify its end-of-ride confirmation.
