Bike with docking or dockless: what’s the difference?
Every journey starts nearby.

The essentials at a glance

A docked bike is taken and returned at network docking points. A dockless bike is tracked individually, but returning it remains subject to the operator’s zones and rules. The main difference is therefore where you can start and finish your trip.

The parking model does not indicate whether the bike is mechanical or electric, nor whether it will be cheaper to use.

Where to pick up and return the bike

In a docked network, look for a point that has bikes available to start and parking spaces to return. A station may use individual docks or another device specific to the service.

In a dockless network, a vehicle can be distributed across the covered area. Check its position and the end-of-ride rules, including authorized parking spots.

The term “dockless” describes how the service is organized; it does not allow you to leave the bike wherever you want.

Understanding authorized zones

Check the perimeter within which the rental can start and end. Return locations may be mandatory even without physical docks.

A destination near the service boundary deserves verification before departure. A bike available in front of your hotel doesn’t guarantee you can return it in front of your next appointment.

Also note actual access: a station might be on the other side of a hard-to-cross street; an individual vehicle might be in a poorly marked spot on the map.

Comparing the two models

Criterion Docked bike Dockless bike
Start Station with bike available Vehicle located within the area
Finish Station accepting returns Operator-authorized spot
Useful check Bikes and free docks Position and parking rules
Final confirmation Network locking procedure Procedure in the app or on the bike

The availability of information varies by service. A map showing only locations does not necessarily answer the question “can I leave now?”

Unlocking, pausing and ending a rental

Procedures depend on the operator, not just the parking model. A pause can lock the bike while keeping the rental active. Check billing terms before using it.

In both models, wait for the end-of-ride confirmation. You will find the general steps in our self-service operation guide.

Which model to choose for your trip

A docked network can be convenient if both ends of your trip are close to well-placed stations. A dockless network can offer other pickup options, provided a vehicle is available and the destination allows returns.

Fictitious example: to reach a train station, compare the network station and the authorized spots of other services. The right choice lets you pick up a bike and return it before entering the station, with enough margin.

Frequently asked questions

Are dockless bikes always electric?

No. Parking model and motorization type are two distinct characteristics.

Can you leave the service area?

Check the operator’s circulation and return rules before your trip.

Can a docked bike be returned to another network?

Do not assume so. Returns must comply with the terms of the service used.
